convenient NHS Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) service. ABPM measures your blood pressure throughout your normal daily routine, giving a more accurate picture than a single reading and helping to diagnose or monitor high blood pressure (hypertension).
The monitor automatically records your blood pressure at regular intervals during the day and night while you continue your usual daily activities.
What happens during your appointment?
During your appointment, one of our trained pharmacy team members will:
Fit a small portable blood pressure monitor to your upper arm
Explain how the monitor works and what to expect
Show you how to wear the monitor during your normal daily activities
Arrange for you to return the monitor after 24 hours
Ensure your blood pressure readings are reviewed and shared with your GP or referring healthcare professional where appropriate
The appointment is quick and straightforward, and you'll be able to carry on with most of your normal daily routine while wearing the monitor.
Why might you need ABPM?
Your healthcare professional may recommend ABPM if:
Your blood pressure readings have been higher than expected
Further monitoring is needed to confirm high blood pressure (hypertension)
Your blood pressure medication needs reviewing
There is concern about "white coat hypertension", where blood pressure is only high in a clinical setting
Ongoing monitoring is needed to assess how well your blood pressure is controlled
