Protect yourself this flu season with a free NHS flu vaccination at PillBox Chemists.
Flu (influenza) can cause serious illness and complications, particularly for people who are more vulnerable. The NHS flu vaccination programme helps protect people who are at greater risk of becoming seriously unwell from flu.
If you're in an eligible group, you can receive your flu vaccination free of charge through the NHS.
For the 2026/27 flu season, pregnant women can receive their vaccination from 1 September 2026, while the other eligible groups covered by this service can receive their vaccination from 1 October 2026.
You may be eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination if you fall into one of the following groups:
Aged 65 or over
You are eligible if you:
Are aged 65 or over, or
Will turn 65 on or before 31 March 2027
You do not need to have an underlying health condition to qualify through age.
Pregnant women
You are eligible at any stage of pregnancy and at any age.
Pregnant women can receive their NHS flu vaccination from 1 September 2026.
Care home residents
People living in long-stay residential or nursing care homes are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination.
People experiencing homelessness
People aged 16 or over who are sleeping rough or using homeless hostels or night shelters are eligible from 1 October 2026.
People aged 18–64 in a clinical risk group
You may be eligible if you have one or more of the following:
Chronic respiratory disease
Chronic heart and vascular disease
Chronic kidney disease
Chronic liver disease
Chronic neurological disease
Diabetes or adrenal insufficiency
A weakened immune system because of a condition or treatment
An absent or poorly functioning spleen
Severe obesity, with a BMI of 40 or above
Specific clinical criteria apply, so our pharmacy team will confirm whether your condition makes you eligible.
Carers and household contacts
You may also be eligible if you:
Receive Carer's Allowance
Are the main carer of an older or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you become unwell
Live with someone who has a weakened immune system
Frontline social care workers
Certain frontline social care workers who provide direct care may also be eligible where they do not have access to an employer-led occupational health vaccination scheme.
Not sure whether you're eligible? Our pharmacy team can check your eligibility before vaccination.
Our healthcare professional will:
Confirm your eligibility for the NHS service
Review your relevant medical and vaccination history
Ask about allergies and any previous reactions to vaccines
Check that the flu vaccine is suitable for you
Explain the vaccination and possible side effects
Obtain your consent
Administer the vaccine where appropriate
Provide aftercare advice and answer any questions
The flu vaccine offered will depend on your age and individual circumstances.
Flu viruses can change over time, and protection from previous flu vaccinations can decrease.
Flu vaccines are offered each season to help protect against the flu viruses expected to be circulating.
Having your recommended flu vaccination each year can help reduce your risk of becoming seriously unwell from flu.

The NHS Flu Vaccination Service is free of charge for eligible patients as part of the NHS seasonal flu vaccination programme.
Eligibility criteria apply. Our healthcare professional will confirm your eligibility and assess whether vaccination is suitable before administering the vaccine.
If you're not eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination, you may be able to book our Private Flu Vaccination Service instead.
This version also deliberately leaves the children's flu programme out of the eligibility section. Your guide treats children's vaccination separately, with different pharmacy routes and age rules, so I think that should remain a separate Healthera service rather than mixing it into this listing.
