Rabies - vaccination

Protect yourself against rabies with our private vaccination service. Recommended for travellers visiting high-risk areas and individuals at increased risk of exposure to rabies.

Rabies is a rare but serious viral infection that affects the brain and nervous system. It is usually spread through the bite, scratch or saliva of an infected animal. Once symptoms develop, rabies is almost always fatal, making prevention extremely important.

Our private Rabies Vaccination service helps protect individuals who may be at increased risk of exposure, particularly those travelling to countries where rabies is more common.

Before vaccination, one of our healthcare professionals will assess your travel plans, medical history and individual circumstances to determine whether the vaccine is suitable for you.

Who should consider the rabies vaccine?

The rabies vaccine may be suitable for:

  • Travellers visiting countries where rabies is more common

  • People spending extended periods in rural or remote areas

  • Backpackers and adventure travellers

  • Individuals working closely with animals

  • Veterinary professionals and animal handlers

  • Laboratory workers who may be exposed to the rabies virus

If you're unsure whether you need the rabies vaccine, our healthcare professional will be happy to discuss your travel plans and individual risk.

What happens during your appointment?

During your appointment, one of our qualified healthcare professionals will:

  • Review your travel itinerary and medical history

  • Assess whether the rabies vaccine is recommended for you

  • Discuss the benefits and possible side effects of the vaccine

  • Administer the vaccination safely

  • Provide aftercare advice and answer any questions

The vaccination is given as an injection into the upper arm and appointments usually take around 15–20 minutes.

Why choose PillBox Chemists?

  • Convenient private travel vaccination appointments

  • Experienced healthcare professionals

  • Personalised travel health advice

  • Professional and confidential service

  • Suitable for a wide range of travel destinations

  • Advice before and after your vaccination

  • Convenient pharmacy locations

Please note

The Rabies Vaccination is a private service and charges apply.

Pre-exposure vaccination usually consists of a course of three doses, although the recommended schedule may vary depending on your travel plans and individual circumstances. Your healthcare professional will advise you on the most appropriate vaccination schedule.

Please remember that vaccination does not remove the need for urgent medical attention following a bite or scratch from a potentially rabid animal. If you are bitten or scratched while travelling, you should wash the wound immediately and seek medical advice as soon as possible, even if you have been vaccinated.
