Shingles - Pharmacy First

If you think you have shingles, our pharmacists can assess eligible adults aged 18 years and over and provide NHS advice and treatment where clinically appropriate, helping you access care quickly without waiting for a GP appointment.

If you think you have shingles, you may not need to wait for a GP appointment. Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, our qualified pharmacists can assess shingles and provide NHS treatment where clinically appropriate.

This service is available for adults aged 18 years and over who have symptoms of shingles.

What happens during your consultation?

During your consultation, one of our pharmacists will:

  • Discuss your symptoms and when they started

  • Review your medical history and any current medication

  • Assess whether the Pharmacy First service is appropriate

  • Recommend the most suitable treatment

  • Supply NHS medication where clinically appropriate

  • Refer you to another healthcare professional if further assessment is needed

Early assessment is important, as antiviral medicines are most effective when started as soon as possible after the rash appears.
