Skin Infection - Pharmacy First

Think an insect bite has become infected? Our pharmacists can assess eligible patients aged 1 year and over, provide expert advice, and supply NHS treatment where clinically appropriate, helping you access care without waiting for a GP appointment.

If you have an insect bite that has become infected, you may not need to wait for a GP appointment. Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, our qualified pharmacists can assess infected insect bites and, where clinically appropriate, provide NHS treatment, including antibiotics if needed.

This service is available for adults and children aged 1 year and over with symptoms of an infected insect bite.

What happens during your consultation?

During your consultation, one of our pharmacists will:

  • Discuss your symptoms and when the bite occurred

  • Assess the affected area and determine whether it is infected

  • Review your medical history and any current medication

  • Recommend the most appropriate treatment

  • Supply NHS medication where clinically appropriate

  • Refer you to your GP or another healthcare service if your symptoms require further assessment

Your consultation is private, confidential, and focused on helping you receive the right care as quickly as possible.

Common signs of an infected insect bite

You may be suitable for this service if your insect bite has become infected and you are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Increasing redness around the bite

  • Swelling that is getting worse

  • Pain or tenderness

  • Warmth around the affected area

  • Pus or discharge from the bite

  • Symptoms that are worsening rather than improving

If you develop severe swelling, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, or feel seriously unwell, you should seek urgent medical attention immediately.

Why choose PillBox Chemists?

  • NHS Pharmacy First consultations

  • No GP appointment required

  • Qualified pharmacists providing expert clinical advice

  • NHS treatment available where clinically appropriate

  • Convenient appointments and walk-in availability at most branches

  • Friendly, professional care close to home

If you're unsure whether your symptoms are suitable for this service, speak to our pharmacy team. We'll assess your condition, provide advice and treatment where appropriate, or refer you to another healthcare professional if further care is needed.

Please note: This NHS service is available to eligible patients only. Treatment is provided following a clinical assessment and in accordance with NHS Pharmacy First guidelines. If your symptoms fall outside the service criteria or require further investigation, our pharmacist will advise you on the most appropriate next steps. Where medication is prescribed e.g. antibiotics, if you are not exempt from prescription charges, you will need to pay the standard NHS prescription charge.
